Through educational events and community outreach, Zen Hospice Project seeks to inspire dialogue, learning, and understanding about the meaning of death as an inevitable and inherent part of life.

Our Events are designed to support individuals and their loved ones in finding ways of living more fully with their life-threatening or chronic illness, and the loss of loved ones to these. We also offer trainings designed for professionals who seek mindful and compassionate approaches to providing end-of-life care.

In addition, Zen Hospice offers public talks designed to de-mystify death & dying, spark community discussions, and investigate responses to suffering. These are offered in a variety of settings, such as schools, nursing groups, healthcare institutions, social service agencies, and spiritual communities.

Mindfulness Grief Group – 8 Weeks
Fall: September 23 - November 11
Tuesday Evenings, 7 pm-9 pm

This group emphasizes mindfulness and the healing power of group support, with the guidance of a wise and compassionate facilitator. Our groups cultivate healing for anyone who has experienced a significant loss, such as the death of a loved one, an accumulation of relationship transitions, or the loss of an ability or identity. In general, people who attend bereavement groups can develop a greater sense of ease and acceptance in day-to day-life (even though the grief process can be longer than 8 weeks and is not a linear process) while they are learning to live with their losses.

Please note that this is not a drop-in group and requires an interview with the Bereavement Coordinator and acceptance into the group with a commitment to attend all eight consecutive weekly sessions. Please contact Carlyle Coash at 415-863-2910 x 7 to register early as these groups fill quickly and they are limited to 10 people.

The Zen of Bereavement
Tuesday, September 9
Thursday, November 13
3 pm-5 pm

With mindful effort, each of us can transform the pain of loss into growth, healing, and inspiration for the future.  Our model of bereavement care is unique for its foundational view that we are all interconnected through the reality of impermanence, and the possibility of personal transformation through calming the mind, balancing the emotions, and attending to the present moment. This lecture offers tools for coping with significant loss, such as the death of a loved one, an accumulation of relationship transitions, or the loss of an ability or identity.
